Filmmaker Biographies


Agnieszka HollandAgnieszka Holland (Director)

Born in Warsaw in 1948, Holland studied film directing at FAMO in Prague. She returned to Poland in 1972, and began a long collaboration with Andrzej Wajda, including co-writing WITHOUT ANESTHESIA. In 1979, she made her solo directorial debut with PROVINCIAL ACTORS, which won the International Critics Prize at Cannes. She has since written screenplays and directed numerous films including THE FEVER: THE STORY OF THE BOMB (1980), WOMAN ON HER OWN (1981), ANGRY HARVEST (1985), TO KILL A PRIEST (1988), EUROPA, EUROPA (1990), OLIVIER, OLIVIER (1991), and THE SECRET GARDEN (1992). In addition, her many screenwriting credits include DANTON (1982), A LOVE IN GERMANY (1984), ANNA (1987) and BLUE (1993).

Christopher Hampton (Screenwriter)

An Oxford graduate, Christopher Hampton was born in 1946 in the Azores and as a child traveled throughout Egypt, Aden and Zanzibar. He is perhaps best known for his acclaimed stage play "Dangerous Liaisons" which he adapted for the screen, winning international recognition and an Academy Award. The screenplay of TOTAL ECLIPSE is adapted from one of his earliest plays, which was performed at the Royal Court Theatre in 1968, televised by the BBC, and also performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Hampton's screenwriting credits include A DOLL'S HOUSE, TALES FROM THE VIENNA WOODS, THE HONORARY CONSUL, THE GOOD FATHER, MARY REILLY, and CARRINGTON, starring Jonathan Pryce and Emma Thompson, which he also directed. His television credits include the BBC productions THE HISTORY MAN, TARTUFFE, and HOTEL DU LAC, which won the BAFTA award for Best Single Television Drama in 1986.

Hampton's next project as a writer and director is THE SECRET AGENT, starring Bob Hoskins, Patricia Arquette and Gerard Depardieu.

Jean-Pierre Ramsay Levi (Producer)

A former journalist and book publisher, Ramsay Levi founded FIT Productions in l986. The company has produced many feature films, TV programs, and documentaries. Their most recent feature was L'OEIL DE VICHY by Claude Chabrol.

Yorgos Arvanitis (Director of Photography)

Arvanitis has served as Director of Photography on numerous international films including Theo Angelopoulos' LE REGARD D'ULYSSE, Goran Paskaljevic's SOMEONE ELSE'S AMERICA, Marco Bellocchio's IL SOGNO DELLA FARFALLA, Volker Schlondorff's HOMO FABER, and Jean-Jacques Andrien's AUSTRALIA.

Dan Weil (Production Designer)

Dan Weil has served as Production Designer on several films by Luc Besson including THE PROFESSIONAL, LA FEMME NIKITA, and THE BIG BLUE.

Isabel Lorente (Editor)

TOTAL ECLIPSE marks Isabel Lorente fourth collaboration with Agnieszka Holland; she also served as editor on THE SECRET GARDEN, OLIVIER, OLIVIER, and EUROPA, EUROPA. Most recently, Lorente edited James Ivory's JEFFERSON IN PARIS.

Pierre-Yves Gayraud (Costume Designer)

Pierre-Yves Gayraud has designed costumes for a number of French films including Eric Barbier's LE BRASIER, Regis Wargnier's INDOCHINE, and Nouri Bouzid's BEZNESS.

Jan A. P. Kaczmarek (Composer)

Jan A. P. Kaczmarek won a 1992 Drama Desk Award for Best Music in a Play for the New York Shakespeare Festival's production of TIS A PITY SHE'S A WHORE. His film scores include FELONY, GOSPEL ACCORDING TO HARRY, and DOPPELGANGER.

He has also scored several television productions including ABC-TV's EMPTY CRADLE directed by Paul Schrader and Lifetime's NIGHT OWL.
